Telling a Story With Shaped Bokeh - Five Examples | We all love a photo that tells a story. In stories we talk about sub plots. Subplots can relate to the main plot and enrich in it many ways. It can prelude the main plot and help create emotional attachment to the characters. It can contradict the main plot and provide irony. It can resonate with the main plot, making its point stronger. In photography we have subject and background (or far plain). The background can relate to the subject, in similar ways that a sub plot relates to a main plot. To illustrate that point I decided to use images with shaped bokeh. read more | | 3/19/2010 1:29:59 PM - DIYPhotography |

My First Shoot with the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8
Tuesday afternoon I was walking by Kevin Agren’s office (he’s our Director of Sales), and he asks if I ever got a chance to try the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom he had gotten us as a loaner. I told him I had actually tried it out on a shoot I did back in December for [...] | | 3/19/2010 6:16:51 AM - Photoshop Insider |

Light Fare: The "Jarvie Window" | Here's a new use for your ring flash.
Salt Lake City-based photographer Scott Jarvie made a unique set of portraits using a Ray Flash ring flash adapter and an 8mm fisheye lens.
Gimmicky? Perhaps. Fun and creative? Yup.

If you're still on CS1 and want to upgrade, now's a good time | If you own a product from the first generation of the Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop CS, released in 2003) and want to be able to upgrade it to a more recent version, now's a good time to pull the trigger. I'm not hinting about the possible timing of future releases. I am noting, however, that Adobe introduced a "three versions back" policy a couple of years ago. That means that you can upgrade from CS, CS2, or CS3 to the current version (CS4). When the current version goes up by one, so will the cutoff for upgrades. Therefore if you're holding onto a copy of CS and may want to upgrade it at some point, well, you shouldn't wait too long. | | 3/18/2010 8:40:27 AM - John Nack |

Tips For Taking Better Family Digital Photos |
Taking pictures of your family can happen suddenly due to an unexpected happy event that brings everyone together or as a result of typical everyday activities that you want to document.
But most of the time family picture taking takes place during planned events such as parties, family picnics, holiday celebrations and so forth so you should be well prepared for these times.
You want good pictures, but you also want them to be eye-catching and interesting so you should learn to vary ...

German Ice Cream: Clipping Path Of Doom | Duh, it isn't a PsD because the lid is see-through. And there just happens to be an owl-shaped white balloon behind it that just makes it look as though it is a disaster, even though it isn't really. PsD sucks.

Lasers, Russell Brown, & you (this summer) | Adobe's own Russell Brown is planning a 1.5-day, hands-on course teaching advanced painting tips and techniques using the newest version of Adobe Photoshop. The course runs June 5-6 in conjunction with the HOW Design Conference in Denver, CO: This inspirational event is designed for graphic designers, art directors, and creative directors looking for creative new ways to use Adobe Photoshop in their projects. Photographers might enjoy this event as well and should definitely consider taking this class. Take note, this is not a good class for a beginning user of Photoshop. This class will be focused on advanced painting techniques found in the latest version of Photoshop. There will also be some basic use of Adobe Illustrator in class for those who are interested in avatar mask experimentation. If learning how to use all the new creative brushes, textures and presets in Adobe Photoshop sounds interesting, then this is the class for you!
I'm planning to be there, so I hope to see you in person. | | 3/16/2010 11:14:06 PM - John Nack |

Something Fun While You Do Your Brackets |
For those of you not in the US, please excuse us while our collective attention turns toward "March Madness," AKA the always exciting, single-elimination NCAA college basketball championship tournament. Our productivity plummets to zero as we spend our workday filling out our brackets and trying to pick the winner in the office pool.
What does this have to do with lighting, you ask? Nothing, except for this:
I think it is safe to say that, with the airing of the above commercial, Buffalo Wild Wings has just become the Official Chicken Wing of Strobist.com. You gotta love the Frankenflash thing they made as a prop, too.
Good luck to everyone with their tourney picks. My Florida Gators drew BYU for their first game, which does not look promising. But then, we're just happy to be here this year.
And make my Buffalo Wild WIngs extra hot, please.
(Thanks to Steve for the tip.)

Selling Your Photos to Book Publishers

Prowling used bookstores in the search for old photography books back in 2002, photographer Karl Baden began to notice something unusual.
