  • Justin Griffith I think we all as a whole should step it up on the quality in our collection. We are designers and we should be keeping our work looking fresh. This site has potential to be a monster but we won't get there with templates that look 20th century.

    • AdminTotally agree. We are preparing for our Spring Offensive and it's going to be a doozy - almost everything is being re-done from the ground up. Quality standards - aesthetic and technical are going to be raised and also easier to understand. I'll give a hint about the spring campaign - it's theme is Back to Basics - infer from that what you will! :)

Fifteen Fabulous Fantasy Fotos from Flickr

Fantasy, fiction, surreal, conceptual, composite, Photoshop… call them what you will. I call them artistic and creative. Photography in itself is artistic and creative, but using a photo (or photos) for a derivative work is no less appealing to me. I’m actually envious of people who can combine images or add to photos and create something completely new — I can’t do it… and I probably never will.

I’ve just finished looking through approximately 550 of your photographs. A tough undertaking, and one of my own making because I’ve put off writing this post far too often. However, there is a bright side to it. Here, we have 113 of your photographs that are really cool. They’re all my favourite photographs from the ones [...]

To Heal or Not to Heal – Blemish Removal

Have you ever erased someone’s moles only to get a “oh…um….ok” response? I have. We might think we’re doing someone a favour by removing imperfections from their features but when does is go too far? What are the rules about removing blemishes? The first thing I would consider is whether I know the person personally or not. [...]

Portraiture in Motion: How to take Striking Portraits in 15 minutes or less

Let’s face it. We don’t always have all the time in the world to do a portrait session. Clients run late. The light fades. Opportunity is not always on our side. What happens when you are in a crunch, and the time you have for a session is less than ideal? Have no fear. With a [...]

I know—nobody remembers the second place of anything. You don’t remember who lost the Super Bowl, or who took 2nd place in the World Cup, or who won the Silver metal, but I have to admit, I’m pretty excited about being #2 this time. Worth a Sub: Michael Grecco's New YouTube Channel

Celebrity / Nekkid People photographer Michael Grecco has created a YouTube page to display his many excellent behind-the-scenes videos.

Some of you may not know that he started out as a photojournalist, and began pushing the lighting envelope way back in the very beginning of his career.

The Will Farrell shoot (c. Blades of Glory) embedded above is a great example of why I always enjoy Grecco's time-lapse BTS vids. There's a lot to learn in a minute and change. Not only is he showing you the whole set build, shoot and tear, but there are several cool lighting info nuggets to be had.

Hit the jump for a some of the things you can learn from this video, a second vid and links to more.
    __________

    What's to See

He is pushing on-axis fill in both segments, although in a different way each time. In the first shoot, he is using a ring flash with a softening reflector. The main light is a beauty dish, off axis. You can see the distinctive dish-with-ring-fill look very clearly in the close-up at the ~31-second mark.

Note how subtle he is with that spot on the background coming from overhead, too. He is not bringing the white paper all of the way up -- just negating some of the fall-off from the key light as you move towards cam...

Q&A: How to Use Your Nikon SB-900 in Optical Slave Mode

As most of you know, the discontinued Nikon SB-800 speedlight has an awesome -- yet, oddly undocumented -- built-in slave. But given the questions I have gotten recently, many people who own the newer SB-900s are not aware that their flash has the same capability.

A walk-thru on how to access and use the built-in slave in your Nikon SB-900 speedlight, and how to get better results from any slave outdoors, inside.

    SU-4 Mode Button Sequence

SU-4 mode is a legacy TTL mode which existed long before Nikon's CLS system. Props to Nikon for continuing to include it. And the day they stop including it is the day I start hoarding old flashes.

By setting your flash into both manual and SU-4 modes, as they say, dis where da magic happen.

    Here's how to do it.

    1. Press the "OK" button until you see a custom function menu appear. Should take a couple of seconds.

    2. Using the command dial, scroll until you get to "SU-4" mode, and press "OK".

    3. Use the same dial. scroll to "on." Press "OK" again.

    4. Press "Exit" to get out of the menu.

    5. Set your selector switch to "Remote".

You are now in SU-4 slaved mode, but you flash may be in either Manual or Automatic firing mode. You almost certainly want Manual mode. Use the "mode" button to get to "M" (or manual) mode.

Now your flash is in manual mode, and set to fire when it sees another f...
