The Most Powerful Light In Your Bag | Last year I photographed Michael Stebbins for Rep Stage, which is how I got to know him for the Glass Menagerie photos.
The Smith Theater, where I shot him, is big and dark. In fact, I had shot someone else there about twenty years earlier for a magazine assignment -- and the Smith Theater had kicked my butt.
I brought every light I had (many, many watt-seconds worth) but I still did not have what I really needed -- the understanding required to work in a big, dark setting.
I even had with me the exact of piece of gear I needed. It was just that I just didn't know how to use it. __________
Time is Your Most Powerful Light
My mistake at the time was trying to light that big cavern with flash. The best I could do was to light a section of seats and have the rest of the cave drift into darkness. And this was with several big White Lightning flashes.
There's a perfectly good explanation, too -- I was young and stupid. What I should have done was to use a longer ambient exposure to let the theater to light itself, and add just a little bit of light to my subject.

10 Fashion Photography Tips | |
Fashion photography should convey an essence of authority, so your direction of the model(s) needs to be confident and self-assured. Showing signs of anxiety, stress or lack of direction will invariably be reflected in the performance of your model so make the subject feel comfortable and involved. Organise a shot list before the shoot and [...] Post from: Digital Photography School - Photography Tips.

A tablet demo too far | I find this concept demo both beautiful & technically impressive: I have a very hard time thinking, however, that this represents the future of magazine publishing--any more than that such rich short films would take over the magazine world via CD-ROMs. Sure, hardware's better and the delivery pipe is fatter, but the cost of producing something visually beautiful & creative remains (and will remain) much higher than shoving text into a template. When moving content online, publishers often trade dollars for pennies, and even high profile sites grind out content for a pittance (e.g. I've read that Gawker pays its writers $12 per post). Then there's the question of audience demand--especially in terms of increased willingness to pay. If people want this kind of richness, why isn't it all over the Web right now? I worked on rich, interactive narratives on Urban Desires, a side venture at my old Web agency, more than 10 years ago. All that graphical cleverness came and went, replaced by ... | | 3/21/2010 3:31:38 AM - John Nack |

Journey Behind a Lens… | | A guest post by Prateek Ahuja from Purple Karma.
For an artist, there is nothing as gratifying as having known they have yet again created a masterpiece – and masterpiece, here, is nothing but what they want to bring to life. Free In Depth Adobe Tutorials For Digital Photographers |
With digital photography your images aren't complete until you've engaged in some form of post processing image manipulation.
That is unless you and your digital camera are so good that there is no need for further adjustments after you've taken a picture.
Well, for people like me, who at least take a quick look at all photo files using one graphics program or another, and then try to make the image better, we're always on the lookout for shortcuts and guidance.

Telling a Story With Shaped Bokeh - Five Examples | We all love a photo that tells a story. In stories we talk about sub plots. Subplots can relate to the main plot and enrich in it many ways. It can prelude the main plot and help create emotional attachment to the characters. It can contradict the main plot and provide irony. It can resonate with the main plot, making its point stronger. In photography we have subject and background (or far plain). The background can relate to the subject, in similar ways that a sub plot relates to a main plot. To illustrate that point I decided to use images with shaped bokeh. read more | | 3/19/2010 1:29:59 PM - DIYPhotography |

If you're still on CS1 and want to upgrade, now's a good time | If you own a product from the first generation of the Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop CS, released in 2003) and want to be able to upgrade it to a more recent version, now's a good time to pull the trigger. I'm not hinting about the possible timing of future releases. I am noting, however, that Adobe introduced a "three versions back" policy a couple of years ago. That means that you can upgrade from CS, CS2, or CS3 to the current version (CS4). When the current version goes up by one, so will the cutoff for upgrades. Therefore if you're holding onto a copy of CS and may want to upgrade it at some point, well, you shouldn't wait too long. | | 3/18/2010 8:40:27 AM - John Nack |
